هدف این مقاله تبیین دلالت «تجربههای نزدیک به مرگ» بر تجرّد نفس است. پس از تعریف تجربههای مذکور، تبیین مولفههای آن و پاسخ به اشکالات وارده، چنین استدلال شده است که این تجربهها دلالت آشکاری بر تجرّد نفس (ذهن) دارند. ایدئولوژیهایی نظیر فیزیکالیسم، طبیعتگرایی و علمباوری که هیچ مبنایی علمی و فلسفی ندارند دلیل انکار تجربههای مذکور توسط طبیعتگرایان و انتساب آنها به توهم و تغییرات شیمیایی مغز است. اما داشتن ادراکاتی بسیار واضح هنگام ناهشیاری و یا مرگ بالینی که فرد فاقد ادراکات است چه توجیه علمی دارد؟! لذا اگر در تفسیر تجربههای مذکور پیشفرضها و پیشداوریهای ذهنی کنار گذاشته شود، به نظر میرسد پذیرش بعد مجردی برای انسان چندان مشکل نیست. همچنین تجربههای نزدیک مرگ چالشی جدی در باب نظریههای فیزیکالیستی در باب «آگاهی» است که در فلسفه ذهن باید جدی گرفته شود.
