در حالی که غالباً از منظر سلامتی یا با تأکید بر جنبههای اقتصادی به ورزش نگاه میشود، در این مقاله، نویسنده میکوشد کارکرد اخلاقی ورزش را بررسی کند و ابعاد آن را نشان بدهد. وجود برخی الگوها و نگرشهای رایج به ورزش و سلطه نگرش پزشکی یا تجاری به آن مانع از توجه به جنبههای بنیادین اخلاقی در ورزش شده است. حال آنکه ورزش، به خصوص هوازی و غیررقابتی، با فضایل اخلاقی گرهخورده است. با این نگاه، نویسنده این اندیشه را پیش میکشد که ورزش استقامتی غیررقابتی در درازمدت سه کارکرد اخلاقی دارد. نخست مایه خودفهمی، خودآگاهی و خودشناسی میشود، دوم به تسلط بر بدن، عواطف و هیجانات میانجامد و سوم آنکه موجب پرورش فضایل اخلاقی متعددی از جمله شجاعت، نظم، تحمل درد و حکمت میگردد.
