ورزش چونان پرورش فضایل اخلاقی

چکیده
در حالی که غالباً از منظر سلامتی یا با تأکید بر جنبه‌های اقتصادی به ورزش نگاه می‌شود، در این مقاله، نویسنده می‌کوشد کارکرد اخلاقی ورزش را بررسی کند و ابعاد آن را نشان بدهد. وجود برخی الگوها و نگرش‌های رایج به ورزش و سلطه نگرش پزشکی یا تجاری به آن مانع از توجه به جنبه‌های بنیادین اخلاقی در ورزش شده است. حال آنکه ورزش، به خصوص هوازی و غیررقابتی، با فضایل اخلاقی گره‌خورده است. با این نگاه، نویسنده این اندیشه را پیش می‌کشد که ورزش استقامتی غیررقابتی در درازمدت سه کارکرد اخلاقی دارد. نخست مایه خودفهمی، خودآگاهی و خودشناسی می‌شود، دوم به تسلط بر بدن، عواطف و هیجانات می‌انجامد و سوم آنکه موجب پرورش فضایل اخلاقی متعددی از جمله شجاعت، نظم، تحمل درد و حکمت می‌گردد.
